How the Japan Rail Pass works
The nationwide Japan Rail Pass is a flat-rate ticket for (almost) all JR Group trains – including most Shinkansen, JR local trains and the Narita Express. It comes in 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. During that time you ride as much as you like without buying individual tickets.
The catch: since October 2023 the pass became roughly 70 % more expensive, and on 1 October 2026 the price rises again. As a result it only pays off if you cover many long distances in a short time.
Two important restrictions
- No Nozomi/Mizuho: The fastest trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines are excluded without a surcharge. You ride Hikari, Sakura or Kodama – a few minutes slower.
- Consecutive days: The pass runs continuously from activation, not on freely chosen travel days. Bundle your long-distance trips.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Japan Rail Pass still worth it in 2026?
As a rough rule of thumb, the 7-day pass usually only breaks even from a Tokyo–Hiroshima or Tokyo–Fukuoka round trip within one week. For the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka and back it is normally more expensive than individual tickets. The calculator above shows the exact comparison for your route.
Is it valid on the Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen?
No, not without a surcharge. With the regular pass you ride Hikari, Sakura or Kodama. The reference prices here are regular Nozomi reserved fares – i.e. what you actually pay at the counter without a pass.
When does the Japan Rail Pass price go up?
On 1 October 2026 to ¥53,000 (7 days), ¥84,000 (14 days) and ¥105,000 (21 days). Use the toggle in the calculator to compare both price levels.
Are there cheaper regional passes?
Yes. If you only travel within one region (e.g. Kansai, Sanyo or Kyushu), regional passes are often much cheaper than the nationwide pass. In the Tabiyume app the pass calculator also compares twelve regional passes that match your route.
